The current club members’ ACF ratings can be found here. Becoming a member, or playing in events organised by our club, mean you also need to abide by our chess etiquette, and also to be aware of our Hobsons Bay Chess Club Privacy Policy.

Thinking of coming along to check us out? Then check out our calendar. Our rapid or blitz event nights are a good time to come. Our long time frame events run 5 or 7 weeks, so coming on the first round of those events is a good idea.

Note: To play in a long timeframe event, it costs $20 (cash) or $15 (online via Tornelo) for the whole event, and please bring a pen (while the covid rules are in place) for you to record your moves.

The club exists for the benefit of members that want to enjoy chess in a controlled, relatively quiet, peaceful environment. In addition, there are issues of responsibility for the safety and well-being of youngsters (think: broken arm following a fall on the stairs, or an exuberant dash across the carpark late at night).

Skill Level

You don’t have to be a champ to join although we are not really suitable for raw beginners. I think we suit anyone with over a minimum of 6-12 months casual chess background. As a guide club members would be able to solve both of the problems below correctly in under 10 seconds each (Black to play).
