Non Citizens: Chess Federation Rating Officer Contact List for every country

Registrants: If the player is a citizen or PR, we will create a FIDE ID for you when we submit your name for FIDE rating. Non PR use the above link.

A chess federation is a governing body of the sport of chess.

In Australia a FIDE ID is used to enter so we’ll need your date of birth to register for you. Only applies to Australian citizens and PR, otherwise follow your local FIDE registration process so we don’t have to withdraw you from a tournament. 😦

To obtain a FIDE rating, you need to participate in FIDE-rated tournaments and play at least five games against rated opponents, achieving a performance rating of at least 1400. After meeting these requirements, your results will be submitted for rating calculation, which is updated monthly by FIDE.

Hobsons Bay Chess Club is a safe place to play a first tournament, here are some suggestions prior to coming to a competition:

  • If you do not know how to play chess – Spectate or play a social night
    • A relaxed and friendly atmosphere – Casual games for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced players
    • Opportunities to meet and connect with others who share a love for chess – Optional tips and guidance from our experienced players
  • If you do know – Come early before a tournament to introduce yourself and familiarize yourself with players, clocks, and writing a move scoresheet.

Some tournament rounds can go as long as 3 hours (1.5 hours for each player), we prefer when people come to the venue, but you can also practice a classical game online to gauge your stamina to sit for long periods. We have faster time control games (called ‘blitz‘ or ‘rapid‘ throughout our yearly calendar).

Blitz means 3 minutes each and Rapid means 10 minutes per player. Classical is above that, and as high as 90 minutes each.

A time increment is a proportionate ‘bonus’ time each move given once your move is completed my pressing the chess clock. For Blitz this could be as low as 1 second each move, whereas a classical game may be as high as 30 seconds per move.

Generally the playing venue is a quite area and it is not tolerated to talk or react to moves of other players in risk of unfairly advantaging players. If you see a good move, don’t share – silently congratulate yourself for finding it. However, you can quietly whisper to ask for help if you need assistance or don’t know the process or want to ask your opponent for their move scoresheet to catch up by pointing or whispering, asking only on your turn.

It’s generally good to register as soon as possible before the tournament’s first round date approaches. Remember, if you’re signing up for a tournament you are committing to those dates and times listed. When you play in our events, it means that you are expected to come along for each week that the event is held. Blitz and rapid tournaments don’t require tornelo registration, but are serious and FIDE rated.

Once you’re ready, register on Tornelo and arrive 15 minutes early to the first round.

There are terms on Tornelo you’ll want to know:
