Tournaments & Ratings How It Works

If you’re new to organised chess, the terminology can be confusing. Here’s a simple guide to the types of events
we run and how ratings work.

Classical Events

Longer games (for example 60-90 minutes per player) played over several weeks as part of a club championship or seasonal event.

Rapid Events

Faster games (for example 10-25 minutes per player), often played as one-day or evening events, ideal for busy players.

Swiss System Pairings

After each round you're paired against someone on a similar score. You're not knocked out ? everyone keeps playing each round.

Ratings

We use ratings (club, ACF or FIDE, depending on the event) to help match players fairly and track improvement over time. Links to pairings and standings are usually shared via Tornelo or our tournament pages.

How to Get Started

Getting started at HBCC is simple. Follow these steps and we’ll take care of the rest.
https://hobsonsbaychess.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/DSC_2991-scaled.jpg
Step 1 - Choose Your Night
Decide whether you want to start with a social night (no clocks) or jump straight into a club tournament.
For most tournaments and social nights, you’ll register via our Member & Events portal – links are provided on our Calendar and event pages. If you’re unsure, send us a quick message.
Step 3 - Come Along a Bit Early
Arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time so we can say hello, show you around and answer any questions.
Step 4 - Bring the Essentials
Just bring yourself and a positive attitude. We provide boards, pieces and clocks. If you know how to keep score, bring a pen.
Not sure where to start? Contact us and we’ll recommend the best first session for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a member to play?

You can often try a session or event before committing to membership, but regular players will be asked to join HBCC.

I haven't played in years is that OK?

Absolutely. Many of our adult players are returning to chess after a long break.

Do I need to know how to use a chess clock and keep score?

It helps for tournaments, but we’re happy to show you. Social nights are a great place to learn without pressure.

Are there minimum age requirements for club nights?

Younger juniors usually start in our Juniors program. Older juniors who are comfortable with clocks may be invited into seniors events – speak with our coaches or committee.

How much does it cost?

Event and membership fees are kept affordable. Please see our Membership page for current rates.
