Farewell 2021!

From our illustrious President:

The calendar for 2022 is now updated (here). It remains substantially unchanged from the 2021 calendar. We will commence back with an informal evening on Tuesday 18 January, with the first rated event to start 25 January.

The key points from the AGM are as follows:

Committee:

  • Steve Hogan (President, Treasurer)
  • Mark Salanowski (Vice President, Secretary)
  • Scott Humphreys (Website)
  • Casey Goh (General Committee)
  • Matt Whitford (General Committee)
  • Ruben Nowak (General Committee).

The club will look to re-commence its junior program in 2022. This is viewed by the Committee as vital to the longer-term success of the club.

We will look to offer online blitz and/or rapid events in 2022 through Tornelo. Casey has experience in administering these types of events and has kindly brought this up as an opportunity for the club. These will operate over a couple hour period and will provide an opportunity to connect with new players. When times for these are known, I would encourage players to invite friends with an interest in chess to join.

Thank you each for the 2021 year, although it was interrupted by COVID. Looking forward to a big 2022 at the club. Steven Hogan

Chess when we can re-commence (9 Nov)

If and when we can resume chess, we have drastically thought about how we can run a few fun weeks of chess before the Christmas break. The plan is to have some un-rated events, of varying time controls, so we can get an ‘all rounder’ experience.

The schedule will be as follows (draft, assuming we can get 5 weeks of chess in):

  • Round 1 – Medium length games
  • Round 2 – Long games (evening 1)
  • Round 3 – Long games (evening 2)
  • Round 4 – Short length games
  • Round 5 – Blitz games

With the unrated status, the event will be FREE to financial members. Non-members will be charged the $15 tournament fee.

More details once we are closer to realising some face to face chess!

Western Event terminated

Unfortunately this event series has had to stop where it got up to (2 rounds), due to the continued covid-19 lockdown affecting Melbourne. The 2 games will be sent for ACF rating.

We are hoping the club championship will be able to commence in a few weeks time. Stay safe all of us! Look out for any terminators 😉

Time to saddle up!

Yes, the break is over, the holidays but a distant memory, the wait is over, now it is time for chess at Hobsons Bay once again! So saddle up, and get along to the club in Altona on Tuesdays for 7:30pm chess.

The club is having a casual night tomorrow to ease (no saddle sores!) yourself into the chess again. Gidday up!saddle

Rapid Play rounds 3 and 4

Two more rounds have been played (5 nights or 10 rounds in total). it is still a very tight event. Results are below, and a preliminary draw for round 5.

A full lightning night!

From Steven:

Firstly, I want to say how terrific it was to have 33 players at the lightning on tuesday. This is by far and away the biggest attendance we’ve had at a single night in many years. Special thanks goes to Tony for getting a number of juniors down, however there were a large number of senior players, which is exciting for the year ahead.
Attached are the results for the tournament, Dean, David and Vishal jointly won with 6/7, well done to the winners.
Next week is the start of the next 5 round tournament, the Purdy Cup.
