Farewell 2021!

From our illustrious President:

The calendar for 2022 is now updated (here). It remains substantially unchanged from the 2021 calendar. We will commence back with an informal evening on Tuesday 18 January, with the first rated event to start 25 January.

The key points from the AGM are as follows:

Committee:

  • Steve Hogan (President, Treasurer)
  • Mark Salanowski (Vice President, Secretary)
  • Scott Humphreys (Website)
  • Casey Goh (General Committee)
  • Matt Whitford (General Committee)
  • Ruben Nowak (General Committee).

The club will look to re-commence its junior program in 2022. This is viewed by the Committee as vital to the longer-term success of the club.

We will look to offer online blitz and/or rapid events in 2022 through Tornelo. Casey has experience in administering these types of events and has kindly brought this up as an opportunity for the club. These will operate over a couple hour period and will provide an opportunity to connect with new players. When times for these are known, I would encourage players to invite friends with an interest in chess to join.

Thank you each for the 2021 year, although it was interrupted by COVID. Looking forward to a big 2022 at the club. Steven Hogan

See you next week for week 3. It will run as the same format as this week, two long games at the 30 + 15 sec time control.

Western Event terminated

Unfortunately this event series has had to stop where it got up to (2 rounds), due to the continued covid-19 lockdown affecting Melbourne. The 2 games will be sent for ACF rating.

We are hoping the club championship will be able to commence in a few weeks time. Stay safe all of us! Look out for any terminators 😉

Chess Book Borrowing Library

We now have a small collection of chess books, available to borrow for free. The aim is to read it, then return it (no hoarding please!). Books will be kept with the equipment. Feel free to add to the collection – come on, you must have some books you no longer need/read?

Chess paused…

Just a quick note to say that we are paused from chess for 2 weeks, at this stage. So no chess on the 1st and 8th June.

From our President:

The current tournament will continue to remain 7 rounds. Myself and the committee will work through adjusting the calendar to accommodate the number of weeks we lose.
In addition to staying physically safe, myself and the committee also hope you each are doing well mentally during lockdown. Hoping we will be able to re-commence soon.

A good night to visit the club…

Tomorrow night (16th March), 730pm, would be a good time to visit for those of you looking for some speed chess and also a chance to se what we do. We will play a stand-alone evening of lightning chess. Each player will play 7 games, with a 5 second plus 3 second increment time control. The following week (23rd March) we will commence our next rated event, the 5 round Purdy Cup.
